Scrappin’Great Deals

Hello and a particularly warm welcome to those of you who have been directed here from Scrappin’ Great Deals. My name is Jean and I live in Twillingate, Newfoundland. Twillingate is a small outport community located on the northeast coast of Newfoundland. We are the self-professed iceberg capital of the North and if you love bergs and whale-watching, we are a great place to visit. We are also a five hour drive from St. John’s  - and the nearest scrapbooking store. Imagine my delight when I found Scrappin’ Great Deals online. I am equally delighted to be a guest designer for the month of July.

You are going to absolutely love the papers in the July kit! My one complaint: When you have double-sided paper this gorgeous, which side do you use? Not easy, but the icy blue of the puffy stickers and the chocolate brown cardstock led the way for my first layout: Cool Treats. These colors cry out for ice cream and the blue and chocolate brown designer paper is sturdy enough for the paper piecing I am fond of using in my scrapbook layouts. The ice cream, the teddy, and the ice cream stand are all pieced from the Tiffany’s We R Memory Keepers paper. The vanilla ice cream is not only an embellishment, but a pull-out journaling tag. The only materials here not actually in the kit are the colored cardstock I used for the ice cream cones and the chalk used for shading. The ice cream circle embellishment was made from the Cuttlebug embossing folder,  Jelly Birthday. The raised design is defined with chalk and ice stickles. “Ice cream five cents” was printed on my computer and then punched out.

Just a quick glance at the Penny Lane paper was inspiration enough for my second layout. Tossed around the idea of a family tree and realized my son recently took his family for new family photo. They don’t have the snaps back yet, but when they do, I’m ready with the layout Our Family. I used the Color Box brown liquid chalk from the kit to shade Dad who is actually cut from the ivory cardstock included in the kit. The Color Box  ink/chalk is great. I’d never used the product before but will definitely be ordering and using in the future. The blues and pinks in Mom and Baby Owl are bits and pieces cut from the Tiffany’s We R Memory Keepers paper and jazzed up with chalk and ink. The owl family is raised off the paper on pop dots so your picture will slip easily beneath the branch of the tree. The chipboard swirl was inked an olive color to match the olive ribbon I happened to have on hand. The ribbon and ink are the only products here not included in the kit but the ribbon went so well with the layout it seemed a shame not to use it. The sliders I cut with the Cuttlebug.

My son and daughter-in-law had a wedding to attend this past weekend and Dawn put in a request for a little box to hold a gift card - their present to the bride and groom. That request led to the gift card holder and box below.

Finally I put together this little box of 3×3 Thank You cards. Simple, elegant, gorgeous, and still using paper from the kit. The butterfly punch, ink, envelopes and stamp are all part of the supplies I always have on hand.

Thanks to everyone at Scrappin’ Great Deals for allowing me to play with the July kit just a little bit early. The products were fabulous, making it pretty easy to put together the above layouts.  I very much look forward to seeing what the other ladies came up with.

Please leave a comment. I’d love to hear what you think of my spin on the July kit.

Have a great Canada Day! We plan to have a family bbq and an outing on the water to check out the iceberg up close.  Last night Max and I had a look from Blow-Me-Down. (Yes, that is the name of a place)

Coloring with Copics

Posted: June 25th, 2009 by Jean

I ordered a set of Copics shortly after our scrapbook retreat and received them a week or so back. They are such fun to color with. I had an order for a couple cards and decided to try them out. I love the way these cards look. So bright and cheerful and fun. Not bad for a first attempt. I look forward to learning how to use them.

Here are my cards.

Card Swap

Posted: June 17th, 2009 by Jean

Tonight I’m working on my cards for the upcoming swap. I’m restricted to using StampinÚp products and key for this particular swap is to use one of the new stamps showcased in the sneak peak we had of the new catalogue. I chose the Autumn Days stamp set which has a lovely selection of fall foliage.  Being a big fan of paper piecing, however, I’ve also put together this adorable little bear I’ll use on the card front. I’ve called him Chip. (Notice his head is shaped like a chocolate chip.) I’ve used SU cardstock: Creamy Caramel for the body and for the pads of his feet and his cute little nose, what else but Chocolate Chip? I very much like piecing with this paper. It’s a heavier cardstock which is great when cutting those teeny tiny pieces. Used SU chalk for shading: Chocolate Chip for the body and Pink Passion for his cheeks. Added highlights with the white uni-ball Signo Gel Pen. The mouth was drawn with a Zig Writer 1.2. Color? Chocolate Chip of course! The eyes I simply drew on with a Sakura Microperm .01 pen and again used the white gel pen for highlights. I think he’s adorable!

In keeping with the fall theme, Chip is sitting next to a rather plump pumpkin. The pumpkins were assembled from circles punched with the 1-1/4 inch punch (I used Pumpkin Pie and Only Orange cardstock, both shaded with Bravo Burgundy)
